Case Study: Poultry Industry
Poultry Testing Services — from Feed to Fork
There’s a lot that happens between the farm and the dinner table, and as a company that produces, processes, or distributes poultry products, it’s up to you to make sure safety and quality are up to par every step of the way through poultry testing services — even more so in today’s challenging environment.
Chickens, turkeys, game birds, and other poultry are required by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other regulatory agencies to be tested prior to processing and shipping to ensure safe, quality food products. Doing so helps to keep the public safe from contaminants, spoilage organisms, bacteria, and other harmful, food-borne pathogens potentially introduced in the process and that the birds may harbor. And these types of safety concerns can happen at any and all stages of the poultry life-cycle.
Making sure the birds are healthy starts with understanding the safety checkpoints. That begins with the source of what is put into their bodies all the way through the point of processing.
Barrow-Agee Labs: Your Partner Every Step of the Way
As a complete end-to-end solution provider, Barrow-Agee Laboratories assists customers in the poultry industry through poultry testing services at every stage. We test for nutritional values, product quality, heavy metal residues, allergen residues, antibiotic drug residues, yeast, molds, spoilage organisms and microbiological pathogens.
We provide grain proximate analysis to evaluate for crude fiber, fat, moisture content, proteins, ash, and Ph rise. This important first step makes sure the grains used in your poultry feed is of the highest quality from the start. We also are a certified referee laboratory for animal feed testing through the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS) and National Oilseed Processors Association (NOPA), and we are a Florida Department of Agriculture Certified Feed Lab for nutrients, mycotoxins, and microorganisms.
We perform tests that can identify chick edema (hydropericardium), which has a high mortality rate and can result in a huge loss of stock. Chick edema is caused by a toxic factor in some feed-grade fats and fatty acids. Through poultry testing services, we also are able to identify many other diseases and contaminants that may affect the proper, healthy growth of the birds.
Farm operators can send in samples for us to test the environment for contaminants, as well as to make sure growing birds are free of diseases including salmonella and listeria to help ensure the flock is healthy before heading into processing.
Barrow-Agee Labs provides only the best poultry testing services. We have completed the USDA AMS Laboratory Approval Program for Export of Meat and Poultry Products, and we participate in ongoing proficiency testing programs to keep us sharp. We have an extensive number of certifications, accreditations, and approvals that qualify our team to provide excellent service at every step of the way.
Knowing that speed is an important consideration to get products to market, we employ rapid testing to analyze samples right away. Furthermore, the full life cycle of poultry is typically four to six weeks from hatch to production, so getting accurate test results very quickly is vital to identifying potential issues and correcting them in time. Most poultry testing services can be completed and reported in two to five days, with expedited analysis available as needed.
You’ll receive results quickly to keep the process moving without lengthy disruptions. Your results are then centralized online in our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). A single point of contact for all testing services coupled with one digitally accessed location for all submissions, reports and results gives our customers the easiest way to ensure quality poultry products from start to finish.
Encouraging Cohesion in the Supply Chain
We understand that we will likely be working with several quality assurance professionals throughout the process to make sure all testing takes place at the proper stages, from starter to grower to finisher. It’s common for there to be static in the communication between touchpoints. Barrow-Agee Labs has the unique view of all stages to smooth communication and encourage full visibility into supply chain operations.
We talk with personnel at each stage of the poultry life cycle and we process all of our testing in one location, with centralized, consistent reporting that is visible to the full client organization. One Barrow-Agee Labs representative can see where disparities may be along the production line, and can help tie testing processes together for a cohesive operation.
